How to turn recipe cards into a family cookbook

Photograph or scan every card, get the handwriting typed and checked against the photo, then lay each recipe out beside its card and print it as a bound book. In ChatGPT, Stirloom does the typing, layout and printing: you share photos of the cards, relatives add theirs by link, and you order an 8.5 × 11 inch hardcover that ships in the US and Canada.

Step by step

  1. Gather the cards. Collect the recipe box, loose cards, notes in the margins of old cookbooks and clippings. Ask relatives which dishes they would miss most, so the book has the recipes people actually cook.
  2. Photograph each card. Use daylight, lay the card flat, fill the frame with it and turn the flash off. Photograph the back too when it has writing. A scan or a scanned PDF works as well.
  3. Type up the recipes. Keep the cook’s own wording and units, and mark words you can’t read instead of guessing. With Stirloom, ChatGPT types each card and marks unreadable words [?].
  4. Check every recipe against its card. Read each typed recipe next to its photo. Fix misread words and ask whoever knows the dish to fill in the gaps.
  5. Bring in the rest of the family. Give relatives one simple way to add their own cards. With Stirloom that is a private family link: no account needed, and each card waits for your OK.
  6. Lay out the book. Put each card photo next to its typed recipe, group recipes by category, and add a contents page, an index and a dedication.
  7. Preview, then print. Page through the whole book before you order. Order a copy for each household, or ship one straight to the person it is for.

When something else fits better

If you want a designer to lay out every page by hand, a full-service maker fits better. If you need a coil binding that lies flat, or shipping outside the US and Canada, Stirloom can’t do that yet.

Questions

How many recipes do I need?

At least 6 and up to 120. About 40 recipes fit in up to 96 pages, about 80 in up to 176 pages, and about 120 in up to 256 pages.

Can I include recipes that were never written down?

Yes. Type or dictate them in ChatGPT. A typed recipe without a card takes a single page.

What if some of the handwriting is unreadable?

ChatGPT marks words it can’t read with [?] instead of guessing. You see each photo beside its text, so you or a relative can fill them in before printing.

Does it change the recipes?

No. It keeps the cook’s own wording and units. It doesn’t invent ingredients or rewrite steps.

How long do printing and delivery take?

About 12 to 13 business days in the US with standard shipping, 7 to 8 with Express, and 6 to 8 to Canada. Printers are busier from mid-November, so allow about a week more then.
